Restorative Practice

What is Restorative Practice?

Restorative practice is about building strong, authentic relationships and making these the foundation for great learning and positive behaviour. It shifts the focus from punishment to accountability, from blame to understanding, and from exclusion to connection.

Instead of asking “What rule was broken?” and “What’s the punishment?”, restorative practice asks three important questions:

  1. What happened?

  2. Who has been affected and how?

  3. What needs to happen to make things right?

This approach helps students take responsibility for their actions, repair harm, and rebuild trust while still feeling supported and valued within the school community.

What does Restorative Practice mean for KBCHS?

At KBCHS, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We know that when students feel respected, connected, and safe, they are more engaged in their learning, more resilient, and more willing to take on challenges.

We teach our ROAR values of Respect, Organised, Achieve, and Responsible in a clear and consistent way. When things go wrong, we use restorative conversations to help students reflect on their actions, understand the impact they have had, and work towards making amends.

This is not about being lenient on behaviour. It is about being fair, holding students accountable and providing the tools they need to do better next time.

How does Restorative Practice operate at KBCHS?

Restorative practice is visible in daily life at KBCHS.

  • Staff work on building genuine, respectful connections with students from the first interaction.

  • Conflicts are resolved through respectful dialogue rather than automatic punishment.

  • Everyone involved in a situation has a chance to be heard and to help decide on a way forward that repairs harm.

  • Positive behaviours are recognised and celebrated through our ROAR system and the rewards supported by our community.

By working in this way, we are preparing young people with empathy, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities that will serve them well beyond their school years.
