Technologies

Technologies Department
At Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School, our Technologies programs give students practical, hands-on experiences that build valuable life skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Through engaging, real-world projects, students explore pathways in food, family, design, and materials technology.
Home Economics – Food Science & Family Studies
Our Food Science courses focus on healthy living, practical cooking skills, and understanding nutrition in everyday life.
Year 7: Students are introduced to basic cooking techniques and complete a project on healthy eating.
Year 8: Focuses on healthy lifestyles and entertaining with food, with weekly cooking and design-based assessments.
Year 9: Explores food for both health and social occasions, with students preparing meals based on weekly briefs.
Year 10: Highlights international cookery and hospitality, including designing global dishes and producing two-course meals, cakes, or pastries.
Family Studies (Year 9/10) examines pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood development. Students engage in practical projects such as baby books, meals for children, and caring for an “electronic baby” as part of the Core of Life program.
Design & Technology – Materials & Design
Students gain essential skills in designing and creating with a range of materials in a safe, workshop-based setting.
Years 7 & 8: Introduction to basic workshop tools, safety, and processes. Students design and create simple wood and metal projects.
Years 9 & 10: Builds on foundational skills with more complex projects using wood, metal, and plastics. Students also explore graphic design and technical drawing as part of the design process.
Our Technologies courses provide strong foundations for future pathways in hospitality, child care, engineering, trades, and design.
